Clark Rant:

I promise.

No this won’t be an extreme Westerner / Personal Development / be more productive & Maximize time management article. If I wrote one of those chances are you wouldn’t have even made it this far.

This article has one goal: To get you to reclaim your lost time. There’s more of it than you know.

In order to do this we HAVE to start noticing where all our time goes. You can try and use typical “Time Management” business strategies, but we all know that feels like the stick more than the carrot. Heck no I don’t want to have my day structured and compartmentalized like some methodical robot. And that time management method’s all sprinkles and rainbows until life gets in the way and that 2:30 appointment is now impossible.

We have to be flexible without being gumby. We have to be able to go with the flow without being driftwood in open waters.

Throughout this article I’ll give you some of the most impactful tips I’ve learned over the years. And as always, I would never share something that hasn’t worked for me or something that I don’t use regularly. I hope this finds you well where you need it most.

Time Management Is Dead

We’ve been doing it all wrong.

Growing up, I kept hearing how it was “all about time management”. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a whole heck of a lot like my time is controlling me rather than me controlling it. It’s for this reason I’m asking you not to buy into “Time Management”. I’ll give you one better: start practicing “Time Ownership”. Really ownership is synonymous here with “Leadership”.

Management vs. Leadership, there is such a MASSIVE difference.

 

Put First Thigns First

Easier said than done, right?

“Put First Things First” is one of the seven habits out of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. (Stephen Covey’s book is legendary)

Here’s the kicker: you need to know what thing’s are considered “first”. How do you decide this? Well here’s one of my personal tricks.

Ask yourself: “If all else fails, what’s the ONE thing I need to get done in order to feel great about today?”

Better yet, come up with two or three things. You might consider making a “To-Do” list. Even better, make a “Not To-Do List” of where you list your top three time-eater activities! Get creative. Remember though, the goal is to do the things that matter, and de-emphasize those things that don’t. (NOTE: it’s easy to convince yourself that by somehow checking emails, social media, other minute tasks that you’re being productive when in reality you’re just being busy.)
